Zinnias in a Tin Can
7x5 inches / oil on panel
SOLD
Here is another nostalgic country cottage bouquet fresh from grandmother's garden. This is actually a companion piece to Sweetpeas in a Mason Jar, painted especially for my client in memory of her grandmother who would pick these charming nosegays for her and arrange them in the most humble vessels found quickly at hand in her kitchen. I always love creating these types of paintings that have a special meaning and bring back the warmth of times past. In fact, I'll have another sentimental painting coming soon from another client, which will be a Daffodil silver spoon in a jelly jar with a label Grammy Nancy's preserves. These are really my favorite kinds of commissions.

Sweetpeas in Mason Jar
7x5 inches oil on panel
SOLD
There is always an abundance of these wild pink Sweetpeas in my garden. Come the first of Spring I marvel at their twining vines and complex little blossoms, but by late Summer when they've run rampant and nearly snuffed out everything in their path, I want to cut them all down. Alas, they always win my heart over again in Spring.
----
These particular Sweetpeas were done at the request of a client whose grandmother would give her small nosegays in a mason jar. She also had done the same with Zinnias in a tin can, coming soon.
Bonica Rosebud original oil painting
"Bonica Rosebud"
5x5 inches / oil on panel
Several years ago we planted a small border of old fashioned roses, one of which is featured here in glowing beauty set against the soft, nearly turqoise blue sky with slight wisps of clouds. As the photo was taken in mid morning, dewdrops still cling to this delicate beauty. This particular painting is a very small peek into what's to come this year with my new direction! Keep watching!
"Rosebud"
It is only a tiny rosebud, a flower of God’s design,
But I cannot unfold the petals with these clumsy hands of mine.
And the secret of unfolding flowers is not known to such as I.
God opens this flower so sweetly, when in my hands it dies.
If I cannot unfold a rosebud, this flower of God’s design,
Then how can I have the wisdom to unfold this life of mine?
So I’ll trust in Him for leading each moment of my day.
I will look to Him for His guidance each step of the pilgrim way.
The pathway that lies before me, only my Heavenly Father knows.
I’ll trust Him to unfold the moments, just as He unfolds the rose.

It's been quite awhile since I painted this series, but as the old year ends and the new one is on the horizon, I've been browsing through my many stacks of nearly completed paintings that were abandoned in lieu of commissioned work. With only a few more commissions from 2010 remaining for completion, I thought it would be nice to clear my head and spend a little time adding some final details to a select few from these piles before heading down the home stretch on the last 2010 commissions.

Beribboned Basket of Roses & Lilies
SOLD
Inspired from a commissioned painting I'd done a few years ago, I'd always wanted to re-do it in a square format to increase that fabulous visual tension which comes from tight cropping. The romantic theme is always so appealing. This painting is available for purchase directly.
SOLD
In this painting I've represented the freshness of Spring with a clean, subtle palette and informal subject matter. For me the major stimulus for creating this painting was actually the glass jar. The clarity of light within the jar and dewdrops contrast with the velvety soft petals. While simplistic in terms of design elements, the painting still follows all the classic compositional rules. A versatile painting in terms of framing, it is quite suitable in a rustic or classical frame style, light or dark. Overall, I would classify this painting as a nice transitional piece between classical and contemporary realism.

One of my favorite colors, mauve pink has that unique touch of coolness to it's hue which is beautifully set off here by a lighter pink rose background. Shades of purple and gold make it pop! Isn't Nature simply splendid?

This lovely painting depicts one of my favorite garden flowers, old fashioned Hollyhocks with their spectacular single blossoms. Of course I love the double blossoms as well, but there's something nostalgic about this old fashioned variety. This lovely sage green or celadon vase really sets off these shades of soft pink.

Introducing my newest blog entitled
Introducing my newest blog entitled
"nothin' but pink"
No doubt inspired by our particularly long, cold winter this year with a loss of power for several days resulting in 18th century style cooking in the main fireplace while my studio and other rooms in the house were a bitter 34 degrees, as well as your many requests for more florals, I've taken this opportunity to begin the New Year with a new, most cheerful pursuit which I hope you enjoy! Thank you for your devotion these past two years following all my other blogs. My best wishes to you and your families for a most delightfully fulfilling New Year!
